The following is a description of our internship program: We provide interns with real work assignments – interns will be doing work that is related to their major, which is challenging and is recognized to the organization as valuable. Each intern will be assigned to a designated trainer/mentor, typically their supervisor, which will be committed to his/her development and training over the course of their term, providing coaching and feedback to Interns. Interns will have the opportunity to showcase their work through presentations – This venue not only allows them to demonstrate their achievements, but also showcases the internship program to Covance senior management, their supervisor and campus advisors. Interns will be required to present their key learning points during the end of summer presentation. Covance will require that all interns to participate in a volunteer project/activity - Devoting time to organizations that are important to Covance will allow the interns to see first hand how Covance is dedicated to it's community (HR will assist in determining the activity, a list will be provided to the intern of all opportunities available for that term). Each intern will be required to dedicate 8 working hours toward this requirement. Supervisor, along with an internship coordinator from human resources, will provide students with an intern evaluation – This is an opportunity for us to provide our interns with feedback and, additionally, a time to gather feedback from the student's on their assignment and overall experience. We will offer a number of educational and work related seminars to our interns – these seminars are designed to help students prepare as they make the educational to workplace transition. This internship within our Biomarker Center of Excellence will explore methods for identifying cellular origin of microparticles (MPs) in non-diseased plasma and CSF samples. Once this context is established, the intern will explore feasibility of various disease applications, for example, measurement of platelet derived MPs as an indicator of pro-thrombotic state, the presence of similar markers as well as those indicative of neurodegeneration in CSF MPs, indications of diabetic kidney function in urine MPs, and further, exploration of the detection of MPs as a substitute for the detection of circulating tumor cells for Oncology. Guided by his/her supervisor/mentor, the intern is expected to be exposed to a wide variety of laboratory skill sets including sample processing, flow cytometry, immunoassay, and western blotting, and would have the opportunity to interact with a number of different scientists within the Discovery & Translational Services business unit. Education/Qualifications Sophomore level or higher; pursuing Bachelor's degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or related subject; Completion of introductory Biology/related laboratory course required. Completion of upper level laboratory coursework and independent research recommended. Proficiency in the use of basic laboratory skills such as pipeting, differential centrifugation, tissue culture, western blotting, and immunoassay recommended.
